All-Scholar Welcome Back Dinner Reflections

On January 17th, 2025, the Luther Hodges Scholars gathered for a memorable evening of celebration, engagement, and fellowship at the All-Scholar Welcome Back Dinner. Incoming Class of 2027 Luther Hodges Scholars were warmly welcomed by upper-class scholars, faculty, and staff as they came together to mark the beginning of the 2025 Spring Semester.

The night was filled with insightful conversation as the scholars heard from two distinguished professors. Professor Greg Brown, Faculty Director of the Luther Hodges Scholars Program, kicked off the evening by sharing the rich history of the program. He emphasized the value of Kenan-Flagler Business School’s greatest asset – the undergraduate business students – highlighting their passion, drive, and potential to make a meaningful impact in the world of business.

After a warm welcome from Sasha Surkin ‘25, Professor Brad Hendricks, Associate Professor of Accounting at Kenan-Flagler, spoke to the group about polarization—In business, academia, and society at large—Encouraging students to think critically about its impact. Professor Hendricks remarked on the unpredictable, and often incredibly impactful, career paths his former and current students may take in the world. The evening also included a special moment when Professor Hendricks was honored with a framed article celebrating his recent recognition as one of Poets & Quants’ “50 Best Undergraduate Business Professors.”

Throughout the evening, scholars had the chance to engage in stimulating discussions and enjoy cross-cohort camaraderie. Senior Representatives of the Leadership Council, Sasha Surkin and Rohan Tapia, were able to speak to the community-building opportunities, both past and future, that all scholars are able to participate in. The dinner was a wonderful reminder of the community and history that makes the Luther Hodges Scholars Program so special.

As we look forward to the rest of the year, we are excited about the opportunities ahead and are grateful for the ongoing support of our incredible scholars and staff. Here’s to a successful spring semester filled with growth, learning, and meaningful connections!
