Building Pathways: Hodges Scholars Welcome the Crockett-Allen Family Scholars to Carolina

Earlier this month, the Luther Hodges Scholars welcomed the Crockett-Allen Family Scholars to UNC–Chapel Hill for a day focused on sparking curiosity, confidence, and connection. After exploring campus landmarks and learning about admissions and financial aid, the high school scholars took a break for lunch at Chase Hall before heading to Kenan Center for an interactive session hosted entirely by our Hodges Scholars.

During the 45-minute session, Tyler Coffee, Charlie Cochran, Raven Heyward, Emmanuel Omolafe, Rosendo Zapien-Diaz, Jasmine Berry, and others introduced themselves and shared reflections on majors, time management, building community, and discovering opportunities that make Carolina transformative. The conversation was open, candid, and shaped by the students’ own questions.

At the same time, parents took part in a transition-focused session led by Dr. Devetta Holman-Copeland (“Dr. D”) from UNC Student Wellness. A certified health and wellness coach, Dr. D leads several campus programs that promote belonging, community, and persistence—providing families with meaningful insights as they help their students take the next steps.

The visit continued at the Carolina Basketball Museum and the Dean Smith Center, ending at the Kenan Football Center & Hall of Fame. On both visits, personal guides showed guests UNC’s proud athletic traditions. It was a lot of fun!

This visit was not merely an outreach event; it highlighted the leadership, generosity, and vibrant spirit of the Luther Hodges Scholars community. We take pride in our Scholars for providing such a warm introduction to life at Carolina, thank the LHS staff for their careful planning of a meaningful and impactful day, and value our campus partners who support our Carolina community.

We are particularly eager to see the new paths our young visitors—the Crockett-Allen Family Scholars—are starting to imagine.
