I’ve always been drawn to the power of innovation to shape the world, which is why artificial intelligence has always captured my interest. When I arrived at UNC, I was instantly drawn to the algorithms behind AI. That’s why I was excited to attend the Luther Hodges Living Room Conversations event on AI usage. What I learned there added a new layer to my understanding of the technology.
The event opened with a familiar question: how do each of us use AI? For me, it was through my Computer Science major and internships. Some used it as support for schoolwork. Others used it rather creatively: from recipe ideas to match their mood to generating pros and cons when making a tough decision. I definitely learned some tips and tricks on how to incorporate AI into my life more effectively.
From there, our conversation shifted from the how to the why. When the phone was invented, its “why” was communication; for Google, it was access to information. So what is the deeper purpose of artificial intelligence? Individually, it has specific uses. For example, a doctor can view it as a tool for more accurate diagnostics and businesses see it as an efficiency builder with automated customer service. But what does it mean at the broadest level? We all had slightly different definitions, but what we settled on was that AI is a technology that performs human-like tasks to make lives easier.
When thinking about society, however, is there such a thing as too easy? We explored the implications of integrating artificial intelligence in routine tasks. If AI drafts our emails, do we lose the personal touch that strengthens relationships? If children grow up with technology that can do their homework, do we risk raising a generation less capable of thinking for themselves? Is AI reshaping the way we think and learn? These questions sparked some of the most meaningful conversations of the night.
As future business leaders, we hold responsibility for integrating AI into our lives and communities. For me, a key takeaway from this discussion is to always keep the human element in mind to ensure artificial intelligence enhances humanity rather than replaces it, because it is ultimately up to all of us to shape the future of this powerful technology.
