Class of 2024 Graduation Celebration

The Class of 2024 leaves the Luther Hodges Scholars Program with profound impact, continuing the legacy of alumni before them. The Hodges Graduation Ceremony marks the culmination of a journey that began under extraordinary circumstances. In 2020, the Class of 2024 started their first year at UNC amidst a global pandemic, leading to remote learning and an unconventional collegiate experience.

As scholars and their guests entered the Kenan Center, they were warmly greeted by LHS staff and members of the Hodges Leadership Council, Lucia Park and Larkin Gliddon. Guests enjoyed light refreshments, mingled, and participated in a gallery walk showcasing individualized posters of the graduating scholars, featuring their names, meaningful photos, and affiliated organizations at UNC.

Dr. Kim Allen, Executive Director of the Luther Hodges Scholars Program, opened the ceremony with welcoming remarks. She acknowledged the impact of COVID-19 on the class and expressed admiration for their resilience. Her thoughtful sentiments added to the momentous occasion.

David Knowles, Managing Director for the Kenan Institute of Private Enterprise, then introduced the keynote speaker, Dr. Shimul Melwani, Associate Dean of the Undergraduate Business Program and Professor of Organizational Behavior at Kenan-Flagler Business School. Dr. Melwani shared her journey from engineering in India to academia in the U.S., connecting with the Class of 2024 through her experiences and offering words of wisdom and encouragement. Her keynote was both relevant and captivating.

A highlight of the ceremony was the presentation of graduates. Keith Martin, the Luther Hodges Scholars Assistant Director of Student Engagement, announced the graduates in alphabetical order. As their names were called, Dr. Allen draped cords around their necks, and David Knowles handed them framed certificates. Graduates then posed for photos amid cheers and applause from the audience.

Gui Marinho, selected as the class representative, delivered the graduation remarks. Known as the program’s cheerleader, Gui shared personal reflections and appreciation for the program, highlighting some challenging and positive memories. He recalled connecting with his cohort over Maple View ice cream and being one handshake away from a former U.S. president.

The ceremony concluded with the presentation of the Class of 2024 Reflection Video. Graduates shared their fondest memories and acknowledged important people in their journey. The video evoked laughter, tears, and smiles from the audience, serving as a beautiful end to the celebration.

As the Class of 2024 departs from the program, they will enter active duty, pursue graduate studies, or join leading global organizations like Deloitte, EY, Capital One, and McKinsey & Company. We are incredibly proud of their accomplishments and look forward to the impact they will make on society as they embark on their professional careers.
