During my recent Explorations trip with the Luther Hodges Scholars to Charleston, South Carolina, I had the opportunity to visit Meeting Street Schools (MSS), an initiative of Beemok Education. Meeting Street Schools serves over 1,500 students throughout South Carolina by reimagining education. Through conversations with teachers, staff, and executive leadership, we learned how MSS blends academic rigor, character development, and community engagement to support under-resourced communities.
Javeria Khan Richman (Chief Schools Officer) shared how academic outcomes at MSS stem from culture rather than control. The school network’s two-teacher classroom model allows dynamic, collaborative instruction while maintaining small class sizes. She emphasized the importance of focusing on outputs, like student learning and growth, noting that teachers thrive when they are empowered as facilitators of learning. She added that parent engagement is essential to student success because it builds shared ownership and trust.
Jere Stille (Chief Operating & Financial Officer), who transitioned from a career at Boeing South Carolina, spoke about finding purpose and clarity in one’s work. He explained how MSS’s funding model, which includes both public and private funding, allows the network to reward teachers for closing achievement gaps. His advice to “find your why” and “show up for your community” resonated deeply, reminding us that effective leadership starts with self-awareness and service.
This visit reinforced the power of purpose-driven education and emotionally intelligent leadership. Meeting Street Schools’ approach demonstrates that meaningful change happens when vision, excellence, and collaboration align to create opportunities for every child to succeed. Thank you to Josh Bell and his team at Meeting Street Schools for hosting us and sharing their innovative approach to education & community impact!
