Future Business Leaders Committed to Changing the World for the Better

Experiential Learning

The Luther Hodges Scholars (LHS) Program prepares students for leadership across business, government, and the nonprofit sector. At the heart of this preparation is experiential learning—learning through experience, guided by reflection and purpose.

What Is Experiential Learning?

Experiential learning means engaging with real-world challenges and reflecting on those experiences to deepen understanding, build skills, and shape leadership identity (Kolb,1984). At LHS, learning occurs not only in classrooms but also through co-curricular programming, team-based projects, and cross-sector internships.

Why It Matters

Today’s most complex challenges require leaders who can:

  • Navigate ambiguity
  • Work across sectors and perspectives
  • Balance results with responsibility
  • Learn continuously from experience

Experiential learning helps students develop these capacities early—and carry them forward.

How LHS Supports Experiential Learning

LHS integrates experiential learning through:

  • A competency-based leadership framework
  • Structured reflection and dialogue
  • A cohort-based learning community
  • A distinctive cross-sector internship experience

Together, these elements help students connect learning to impact and purpose.
